What is a domain name?

Put simply a domain name is an address on the internet.

There are two types of domain names:

gTLD or Generic Top Level Domains which have a single suffix after the name.  For example .com, .net or .biz etc....

ccTLD or County Code Top Level Domains which have two suffixes, the second indicating the origin.  For example .com.au representing Australia.
